I been gone 10 days and you guys are still playing with these inserts?  It only takes a few minutes to make them yourself with a piece of acrylic rod if you have a collet chuck.  Drill it then cut a glue groove on one end and reverse it and cut another glue groove on the other end.  Glue it in and you are ready to go.

And then there's me that has no drill bits for drilling acrylic, no acrylic and no collet chuck.   :turned:  That's why I started the thread Marvin.  You've got a lot more equipment and resources than some folks.

Now that sounds like some kind of a personal problem Parker.   Most of us can't wait to spend the money we get on the calls for more goodies, needed or not. Heck, isn't that what we are suppose to do?

  2 kids in school and a wife going to college full time makes Parker's shop a boring place to be.

No special toys needed   On Jet mini, drill using jobber bits from the big box, use Al's ATF for lube.  Mount the piece of acrylic in the collet chuck and slowly drill through it.  Then cut the glue grooves on the outside, bingo you have an insert.  Less than 5 minutes, cost if you use a piece fo scrap is near zero.

Marvin, do you put a step in the inserts you make like this ?
Also, for those folks who do use them, do you use the supplied o-rings ?
I have only used them once, and I had to cut the grooves a bit deeper to seat them low enough.
As delivered, the rings stuck up way too much in my opinion.

I hate to admit I've had 10 shell creek gut serts and tennons collecting dust and have yet to get around to making any goose calls using them.  I think I'm obsessed with perfecting my duck call tone board right now. :helpsmilie:

I put o-rings on one gut sert and slid it into the tennon the day they showed up.  I did notice it was a crazy tight fit, but I have yet to put a call together with them to see if I needed to polish the tennon or deepen the grooves on the gut sert.

The last 5 calls I made with Shell Creek's gut serts I made the grooves bigger and deeper and went with a much bigger o-ring.  To me it just looked and felt much better.

You can either deepen the oring grooves on the gutsert, or open up the barrel a bit more where the gutsert goes in at.  I use the orings that came with the gutserts, as well as some other orings I have as well.  It is easier for me to open up the barrel than to deepen the oring groove.

Richard,

Not sure what you mean by a step, are you talking about the one on the outside of some of the gutserts?  That is the way I do it, but I have seen some that had no steps on either the inside or outside.  Not sure where I got those from, but those where the ones that I like and used it as a model for for the ones I did.

When I was making my own I used my own O rings and kind of modified them to fit the guts that I had bought.  If I remember correctly they were an odd size, off something like .006 from the standard.  Now I pass on the goose calls, not my thing.
