Flyway X Guts?
« on: December 09, 2008, 11:43:50 PM »
  Man......I REALLY would like to try a set in a call that I can use for geese in the next month.

I had JUST decided I was going to suck it up and buy a set at $7.50......(What's shipping on something that small I wonder?).......but NOW.....I've seen the guts fit a 0.618" hole.

WHAT?!     How am I going to make a .618" hole in my stopper?  Turn it at 1/2" on my mandrel and then ream it?

What bit is a .618" anyways?

I don't want to give up on this idea, but it sure doesn't seem like the solution is very easy, or very cheap.

Well, a 39/64 is .609 and a 5/8 is .625 so take your choice.  :tt2:

Guess I did the research and found my own answer.  If someone in the know can confirm, I'm sure that would help me not have to spend un-necessary funds.

I get the gutsert that fits the reeds, and then my stopper is just a 3/4" turned stopper that goes over the gutsert for gluing.

You can actualy use a 5/8 bore for the both pieces of the call and use your std mandrel. Then put a 7/8 step in the barrel end for the tennon of the  gut sert, and a 3/4 step in the stopper end for the sleeve of the gut sert. The inside dia of the gut sert will be very close to 5/8 and this keeps the bore consistant from one end to the other. You can also glue up and spin the insert with the gut sert in it (.625 bore at least) , this is nice for polising and cleaing up the glue edge.

Parker, get the guts from Shell Creek when you order your gutserts from them

I ordered a FlywayX and a Flyway gut from Keats two weeks ago.  I like the Shell Creek guts better.  I don't know if it is the reeds or my setup, but the Keats guts sounded like they are in a 4 foot long pvc pipe.  There was a hollow tone to it that I didn't really like.  I haven't blown an actual Keats call, so I don't know if they all sound like this.  This is just what I experienced last week.

I can't remember now, but one of them fit better in a .625 gutsert better than the .619 gutsert.  I'll check them out later on today and reply back.

I'd stick with other guts. The flyway X guts are good, but Greg is such a  :censored: That I'd quit hunting if I had to use anything he produces.

I was looking at Shell Creek guts last night too.  Looks like I may give them a try.

I don't know anything about Mr. Keats other than he was the co-author of a cool book.  Not trying to stir the pot about anyone.  Just interested in having a nice goose call to use this winter.

Parker,

Here are two calls I have made with the Flyway and Flyway X guts.  They are supposed to fit a .619 bore.

This first one is the Flyway X guts.  It was installed in a .619 gutsert.

This one is of the Flyway guts.  It was installed in a .625 gutsert.

I ain't no expert yet at the installation of guts yet, so if ya'll see something I did wrong or want to see, let me know.

Thanks,
Brian

Those sure look like some AWESOME calls to me.  Me likes the green one!

Does that type of reed not need shaving?  I know I've read some things in the last couple days about certain gut sets not needing to be shaved.     SO much to learn......so many options.......head. .....spinning...... .

I've always wanted to try the Flyway or Flyway-X guts in my calls.....but the forum posts I've read and the price of the Shell Creek guts, which I'm fairly happy with, have kept me from trying them out.

When I'm not blowing my own calls I generally pick up one of my "Shore Things" from Bay Country Calls.......I'm under the impression it's fitted with flyway guts??

Sorry about the quality, but here are a couple quick pics of the guts in John Taylor's "Shore Thing".  I don't know if he uses Flyway or Flyway X guts, or even what the difference is, but his call has a "crack" to it that I really like.  If I'm not blowing my calls, I'm blowing his. :2up:
