Looking for some opinions on a new design
« on: December 23, 2012, 04:10:18 PM »
I was getting tired of running with thinner duck calls and made one with a bit more meat on its bones.

Let me know on some opinions or how I could change it to look better!

You still need more meat.  Try starting with at least another 1/4" or more of shoulder material above the band size, then turn it down to the mouthpiece end of the barrel.  When I started turning calls I began with a slim barrel and a toneboard end about the same in size.  A famous custom call maker told me the barrel should be larger and fat looking with a reduced slim looking insert.  With the short-reed craze and using 0-ring fitted toneboards a lot of call styles have started to look like dowels or cigars because of the insert increased sizes.  You can get away from that simply by making the barrel of the call larger in size so its thicker above the band.  Have fun with it.

My only issue is the barrel and insert seem similar in size and style. Could be a problem with picking it up backwards.

First of all it looks like a well made call.  But I'm with Joe and JCZ.  I think the insert looks much too similar to the barrel, which makes it look a lot like some of the short reeds that folks build and makes it hard for someone to distinguish between barrel and exhaust.  I'm a fan of being to easily distinguish between the two, as you can when the band tenon is significantly wider than the insert.  To me, that design fits the hand much better too.

Yeah Im thinking im going to shave some material off the top of the insert in order to make it a bit more distinguishable.
