Making an 8 sided call
« on: March 21, 2012, 03:50:15 PM »
I had been ask in the past how I made an 8 sided call that I had posted, so here is the how I did it, although there are other ways I am sure. This is the measurements I used and can be varied for whatever you want.

I also will post at a later date how to cut the 8 sided stopper. I did not take pictures and will have to get that done in the meantime, may be a little while but will do it.

ben

1- Mount and drill blank 3 1/2"  - 5/8 drill

2- This is the jig. A piece of 5/8 all thread 2 flat washers and 2 spacers plus the ends. Across the points on the octagon is 3" across the round disc is 2 1/3".

3- Mount the blank in the jig, be sure ends are square to the blank before tightening up. Tighten tight enough that you are sure it will not move while cutting it out.

4- Set fence on bandsaw for the dia. of the call you want to cut, the taper is there with the jig.

5- When cutting one flat will be against the fence and one will be on the table and the disc will always be against the fence, be sure to hold that position and cut all 8 sides.

6- This is what it looks like off the jig.

7- Mount back to lathe and turn what you want block sand and finish.

8- The finished call

Awesome stuff Benny!  I've scratched my brain several times trying to figure out how to do something like this. Thanks for showing us how.

Thanks for the comments. Now I have got to put together something on the 8 sided stopper, that would have to be an O ring fit to fit up correct to the back of the call.

It would be interesting if someone would try one of these and see what you think about it.

Maybe post to the tutorial section fopr future reference.
