solder inlay... fixing the seam
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:30:10 PM »
I figured out how to hide the seam on my solder inlay.
After I glue the solder in to the groove it hit the seam with a soldering iron, let it cool and turn it smooth.

Here is a picture of the seam.  I marked the seam with a marker before I turned it smooth.

Now I AM going to try this.  The idea of a visible seam always bugged me.  Good to know it can be taken care of.

After some time letting the old brain spin I came up with a stupid question. Do you do a CA finish before or after the soldering?

Bob, I'd CA after.  Because you'll need to turn the solder flat, sand it, then finish the call.  All that would be pretty close to impossible with finish already on the call.  I suspect you could CA right over the solder.

I did another one today just for practice.  :hysterical:

Use ca to glue the solder in place, use a soldering iron to cover the seam, turn smooth, sand and then ca everything.

Thanks for the info. That's what I suspected, just wanted to make sure before really looking stupid.

I've got another little tip.  Go easy on the ca at the seam.  If you use to much ca it will fill the gaps at the seam and when you melt the solder the gaps will already be full.  With the gaps full the solder will not run in to them.  If the solder doesn't run in to the gaps and it only sits on top of them you will get a dirty little surprise when you turn it smooth because the joint will still be visible.

I'm not gonna tell you how I figured this out.  My source asked me to type this up but didn't want me to give his name so his initials are (Paul)  :innocent:
