Cocobola Calls (pic heavy)
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:33:12 AM »
I was commissioned a pair of calls about a week ago and this is what I've came up with. The commission wasn't a typical one (that I know of at least). I was asked by a 19 year old girl on facebook of all places (an old friend of my sister) who wanted 2 calls for her brothers... that's it. No prices, ect. nothing was discussed. I gave her some quotes and said I could do an echo insert call for $35 and bla bla bla but to my surprise she wanted two fully custom calls. My prices didn't really matter to her at all and she was super confident I could do it. Easiest person to work with so far, all I had to do was stay in her budget and make it in the allotted time frame. All other decisions were mine. Moral of my story is to never judge anyone by what you think they expect price wise or quality wise for your calls because I've told hunters and others about my calls prices and they either say: "that's not bad at all for your work" or "that's seems to be a bit high for that" :hysterical: So I have instituted a new policy :smartass: I will not negotiate my prices (which I believed were fair anyway) and will gladly take a loss of a sale if need be. I don't want to come across as a snob for saying that, but I want all to be treated and priced fairly. :2: I'm not out to make a killing, only to feed the addiction. Anyway for every call I've sold I've given or traded two. Sorry if the pictures are a little artsy fartsy, I wanted to try something different and thought I'd give it a try. The awesome bands are from Al. Thanks for looking and comment and critique. I learned a lot from this but you guys made it possible for me ~Andre this is the pair

Very nice!! I love the sapwood. They should be happy with any one of those.

If she asked for 2 calls where is the 3rd one going? If you sold 2 calls you are behind 4 trades.  :wav1:

I was given a good piece of advice when I first started.  I was told to set my price and never negotiate.  People will stop trying to haggle once you stand firm. You will lose a sale or two, but it won't bother you too much.  Great looking calls

Your best yet Andre.  And I like the artsy-fartsy pictures, stick with it.  You and I may have to have a CA finishing contest!   :hysterical:  Those finishes look flawless bud.

You're wise to not negotiate price.  I've lost a few sales because of that, but if your calls are priced reasonably on par with their quality you should never budge.  A couple years ago a friend of a friend came to the shop and was very interested in having a couple custom calls made.  He blew some calls and liked them, and we discussed prices and materials.  He then offered that he'd "pro staff" for me instead of paying full price for the calls, and said he'd pay $25 per call as part of that agreement (well under half of the price quoted).  I told him I'd rather give them to someone that didn't have the nerve to suggest that instead of taking $25 for them.  Needless to say, I'm not into pro staffing, especially when a guy is just trying to get something for next to nothing.  Make a great call, charge a fair price and treat people right, and your customers will be the best pro staffers you could ever have, because they'll recommend you.

Haha :hysterical: Well the third call is going to my dad's friend that invited me as well on a 4 day mallard hunt in kentucky. :punk: Needless to say, I was compelled to make him a surprise call (I don't know him at all and believe he doesn't know about my calls). Also, I'm making 4 more calls right now that I'll be giving away eventually. :stickman1: The list of stuff to make keeps going on from there. KC you're right about that pro-staffer stuff. I never really understood that. Hey, I'm in no competition against anyone besides myself when it comes to CA finishing, but I'm in for a challenge. Thanks everyone for the nice comments! I put some big hours into these calls but I'm getting much quicker and consistent everytime. :thanks: ~Andre
