"Flaming" wood
« on: September 09, 2008, 09:53:32 AM »
Looking for some helpful tips/hints for flaming wood for calls.  I have been successful with "burning-in" lines and such.  I think that flamed hedge is awesome looking and want to try it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the site.  Must say there is a ton of valuable info here.  Glad to be aboard. ;D

Welcome to the forum.

I don't do the flaming, but BigB does and there is a thread awhile back where he showed how to do it.  You might try the search function and find it that way.

I just use a standard plumbing propand torch.  I just go till the wood is dark where I want it, then sand it smooth.

I use a small mini butane tourch and it works well, but i can't reproduce the very narrow dark lines some calls have. I think they may be using friction to make those?

Jeffery I have a small oxy/act torch, but I burn most of mine with a propane grill lighter. Just hold it where you want the burn.

I have an old piece of leather stroppig that does a great job for the friction burning. I don't even remember where I got it. It just happens to be the right size and thickness.

I use denim for the friction burn lines. An old pair of jeans will last a while. And I am doing my part to save the planet one burn line at a time ;D Shawn

Hey Mutt, Glad you could join us buddy  ;D. I am new to the flaming part also.I think I have done only two calls so far  :-[ but was happy with the results.Your gonna laugh when I tell ya how I done it but it worked  :o. I took the finished call, barrel and insert put together and inserted a 5/8" dow in the barrel.I then  turned on my turkey cooker ;D and rotated the call over the flame.an't get it to close or you will have to throw it in the fire  ::). But it works good for me doing it this way. Here is a pic of my first one

Here is my second one

Good luck with it and be careful!

Timber

T-Ghost, not just saying this to be polite but that is probably the best looking hedge call I've seen. VERY NICE ;).  I have a turkey fryer, I have a butane torch, and a whole plethera of things that create a flame/fire.  I think I need to invest in a few fire extinguishers!!!  Hopefully I'll get one posted up for the forums opinion. Again, thanks for the valuable and useful info.

Hey Timber, those is some fine looking burning right here. I don't care how you did it, it sure came out looking good. But I do believe a torch is a might easier on the propane bill than the turker cooker.  ;D
