Some of my first calls
« on: September 26, 2011, 11:36:33 AM »
As promised in my introduction post, here are some of my calls. A few months ago a buddy who knew I was a woodworker asked if I could turn a replacement duck barrel for him. I didn't have a lathe but used this as an excuse to finally buy one. I found this site, read everything I could and started turning. I wanted to turn a few before making his barrel so I ordered some Echo inserts to complete the barrels I started practicing with. I have since started making my own inserts and I am very happy with them, though my firewood pile has grown considerably.

My very first barrel. Bolivian Rosewood from the scrap pile. I turned this on a homemade plug mandrel then promptly ordered the Flint Hills expanding mandrel and collet chuck set.

My first banded call. This piece of Cocobolo was too pretty to leave the Echo in so it got one of my first usable inserts.

My most recent duck call, Coco with a copper band.

A few shapes I've played with.

I use oil and wax, I really like the matte finish but you guys have me thinking about trying out CA.

Thanks for looking, I'm open to critiques. I know I need to polish up the bands and it's painfully obvious that I'm no photographer.

Jim

I wish. I'm suspect that checkering and carving require a level of patience that I do not possess.
