No problemo.  Just hackin' on you a bit.  ::)

If you're able to make the turn-a-thon here in KC in January, Andrew Pupanek the owner of Flint Hills Duck Works and maker of the mandrels, will be here.  He's donating a set of mandrels at the event too.  Glad you liked the videos!

I've got one of his mandrels and I think it's the bees knees!

Awesome job.  I have never been able to figure out a CA finish until I seen your videos.

Thank you,

I have never attempted CA finish, but after watching the videos and the urging of my 12 year old son I think we are going to give it a try soon. Where is the Beall buffing system available for $70?

I'm thinking that mine was about $70 at Woodcraft locally.  Beall sells them direct too, not sure exactly how much.

I picked up the PSI version of the buff system from PSI and with a coupon it was about $40 to my DOOR, cant beat that and it works pretty darn good!

Earlier in this topic I mentioned that I received my CA a couple weeks before the videos were posted. I happened to buy Stick Fast brand medium CA and a pump accelerator and micro mesh pads 1500 - 12000 grit. As mentioned in his video, diffrent brands may have diffrent consistencies. Medium I bought was thick...It wouldn't soak into the Viva paper towels and when applied it booger-ed up and the pump accelerator didn't mist so well. I think more ran down the bottle onto my hand than hit the call. I applied several coats anyway and sanded it down. It actually turned out nice in the end. The next day I ordered Stick Fast Thin CA, and areo accelerator. This stuff worked out like shone in the video. Soaked into the towel and it applied real nice. The pads I used worked nice as well, eventually I will get the buffer though. Both squirrel calls are in my gallery, the nut shaped spalted maple one was done with the medium and the cocobolo one was done with thin.    Again,, great videos, they were a big help.     Just wanted to share my experience using a diffrent brand of CA.

Speaking from experience of not using it, (haven't gotten my can of accelerator yet) It is possible without it. Patience will be necessary (I don't have much of it  :hammer:)  You'll have to make sure and let each application of CA dry for a couple minutes at least to be certain it's dry before putting the next one.  The accelerator makes that waiting into seconds instead of minutes.  It also prevents there from being any sticky spots that might grab the paper towel from you and cause a few choice words to be spoken, or screamed   It isn't necessary to have the accelerator, but my firsthand experience means i wont finish another call with CA until I get it.  (I have some on a fed ex truck in Ohio right now, should be in by the weekend lol)   It's not incredibly easy to get even thickness  of CA across the whole call (for me), which means sanding through it in some places accidentally, and I think it'll be easier to control using the accelerator.  I am in the process of typing up all of my notes from the last couple weeks on CA to let KC take a look at, add to, edit, and then post on here for everyone to hopefully learn from some more of my mistakes and failures  :punk: :hammer:   My intent is to have that finished and to KC by the weekend.

Dan
They will be seen.
They will be called.
They will come in.

Brad the accelerator dries the CA pretty much instantly.  For me, it is kind of like variable speed on my lathe.  Saves me a lot of time and adds convenience.  Not necessary to CA finish a call, but doing it without it will take four or five times longer at least.  When you're putting 15+ coats on a call and there are two or three applications per coat, waiting on each application to dry will take a LONG TIME.

I'm impatient, so for me, accelerator is necessary.

Thank you for the explanation and the videos. I ordered up some glue, acc. sandpaper and a buffing system. Cant wait to try something new and hopefully get this ca finishing down pat.

I got the paper and the ca the other night and got busy. My finishes are turning out ok but i do have a few low spots and pits. I re applied the ca but i cant quite get all the low spots out,it seems i am creating more. So, do i just keep on re-applying the ca or should i get a little more aggressive with the sanding. I did try sanding more but i cut through on the end of the mouth piece. Are you guys ending up with perfect finshes or are you getting low spots and pits as well? Will the buffing resolve the smaller holes. I just got my buffing system today so i havent tried buffing yet.
