CA finishing videos
« on: September 09, 2011, 07:21:56 PM »
In an effort to try to help folks that are new to CA finishes out, I did three video segments that walk you through it start to finish.  It shows the way I do it, although there are different ways of doing it.  There are three, so watch them in order.  I do a lot of talking, so be sure to have the speakers on.  All together there's about 28 minutes worth.  I tried to think of everything but if anyone has anything they want to see more of, let me know.

Good stuff Aaron.  I have done a self taught trial and error regimen (mostly error) over the past couple of weeks. Some tips here that I will try. Thanks for the help, wish I could have seen this 3 weeks ago, might not have glued my fingers to as much stuff as I did.

Great videos and amazingly put together at that. I have been wet sanding between coats and wondered why it was getting eaten off most of the time.  I see now that I just need to apply all my coats and then sand.  Thank you so much for this video  :punk:

Great job.  You make it look so easy.  Maybe that's because you do it so much better than I do.  I to have been dripping from the top and paper towel on the bottom.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

Glad you guys liked it.  I'm going to put this in the general forum for a while to make sure that the members that make other kinds of calls see it, and I'll put it back in the tutorials section later on.

Dripping the CA onto the call from above is actually a proven method Predhead and Flydowntn.  I've seen BigB do it using a piece of plastic bag as an applicator, and I believe that Superdirt uses the same method as well.  There's a lot of ways to skin a cat and my way is only one way!

Great job Aaron!!

Here's the one I made for ca finishing an insert......a dense wood barrel can be finished in 3 coats too, but most barrels will take a couple more coats in the same manner. Thin coats work the best for me, so I dont get ripples in the finish that you have to sand off.

Quote
This is on an insert of mesquite. It has been dry sanded with 400 grit. I'm using ca thin from wood turners catalog and paper shop towels from walmart. Most all hard dense woods will do this. Even coco, hedge, some cedar, blackwood, and so on. Some woods like most cedar, walnut and so forth really soak up the ca, so more first coats will be needed before the first wet sand.
Look to make the first couple of coats fill in all the holes and low spots. Add another coat if necessary. When wet-sanding down with the 400, sand right down to the wood, almost going through the ca. It may go through in a few spots like around the sharp edges. If so, put on another couple of coats and resand.
After the 400, I look for pinholes and low spots. If they are evident, I apply some med or thick ca directly from the container to the spot and mist with activator. Usually, I would turn down the ca with the lath tools taking very light cuts and then reapply a coat of thin. Then on to the 1000. Check for smoothness after this one with the lathe off. If you can still see some grain or pinholes, you need some more coats. Practice and you won't even have to turn off the lathe to get one finished.
One note about sanding large flat or semi flat surfaces.....keep your sandpaper flat and held from each end as I do in the video. It will sand the higher spots more and produce a smooth finish. This is how I sand my barells too. It keeps from having very small ridges and humps in the finish when running your finger up and down the surface. Another way is to sand with the grain by hand between coats like Al's tutorial.
I hope the video is clear enough to see. First time trying to make a video. Please excuse my extreme southern drawl, as I'm from Arkansas! Home of the Razorbacks. WOOOOO  PIG SOOOEY!!

David
